Controversies Surround Graham Platner’s Maine Senate Campaign

2 weeks ago 0

Graham Platner, a Democratic candidate for the Maine Senate, is facing numerous controversies as he campaigns against incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins. Platner has proposed several far-left policies, including universal healthcare, wealth taxes, a Green New Deal, and a controversial suggestion regarding political ads. He suggested that billionaires should be jailed for viewing political ads inappropriately as part of a campaign finance reform discussion.

This remark drew criticism from Republicans and some noted Platner’s connections with billionaire-backed endorsers. Colin Reed, a Republican strategist, highlighted contributions to Platner’s endorsers such as Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, funded by billionaires like George Soros and Jennifer Pritzker.

“Why worry about slowly slipping into a Marxist dystopia? With Graham Platner, you can sprint toward it!” – Jason Savage, Executive Director of the Maine GOP

There are also accusations surrounding Platner’s personal life, further complicating his campaign. Allegations from ex-girlfriends include claims of abusive behavior. One former partner alleged she was trapped in a room by Platner over a decade ago, a claim he denies.

Platner’s campaign has invested over $14 million in the primary stage alone. Shawn Roderick, from Collins’ campaign, questioned Platner’s use of public funds for high-priced consultants and platform advertising amidst these controversies.

Another scandal involves explicit messaging exchanged with multiple women during Platner’s marriage on the app Kik. Platner’s engagement with the app has been mocked by political adversaries, including a protest by staffers wearing towels, mimicking a photo Platner reportedly used on the app.

“Dude is big on locking people in rooms against their will, apparently,” – Scott Jennings, CNN Senior Political Commentator

Platner has apologized for a prior tattoo with Nazi-linked symbolism, which he has since covered. He claimed ignorance of its original meaning and voiced regret after being informed of its significance.

Old Reddit posts by Platner have sparked further controversy with inflammatory comments on sensitive issues. Platner said these do not reflect his current views and were made during a difficult period after his military service.

Despite these allegations and controversies, Platner asserts that the assaults on his character are politically driven. His campaign contends that national media have fixated on his personal controversies, diverting attention from key issues relevant to Maine voters.
