Vandalism on the National Mall Sparks Controversy Amid Presidential Event

2 weeks ago 0

The National Park Service has initiated a criminal investigation following the discovery of numbers stained into the grass near the Washington Monument. This act of vandalism is the latest in a series of incidents linked to a term that the Trump administration claims suggests assassinating the president.

On June 11, 2026, at 8:00 p.m. ET, officials noticed large numbers, ’86 47,’ marked on the verdant expanse that stretches from the Washington Monument to the World War II Memorial. The area is known for being a central gathering space in the nation’s capital.

The term ’86’ historically means to dismiss or remove, and in some contexts, it signifies to kill or eliminate. President Trump, who is currently the 47th president, as well as having served as the 45th, has been the subject of past assassination attempts. The Trump administration has previously identified the expression ’86 47′ as a call for the president’s assassination.

The brown patches formed the numbers so distinctly that they were visible from a camera atop the Washington Monument. The cause of the discoloration remains unclear, but it appears someone went to significant lengths to alter the grass. These actions took place shortly before President Trump is scheduled to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship event in close vicinity to the White House on his 80th birthday.

The U.S. Park Police released a statement on Thursday, acknowledging the incident and its investigation. The vandalism was reported at about 11:30 a.m. on the west lawn of the Washington Monument.
