Mackenzie Shirilla, convicted of causing a fatal crash, is now working as a food service worker in the Ohio Reformatory for Women. This information was confirmed by Ohio prison officials to Fox News Digital. Shirilla is serving a life sentence for the 2022 crash that resulted in the deaths of her boyfriend and their friend. Despite interest in the specifics of Shirilla’s prison duties, officials have not released further details due to Ohio public records exemptions.

The case has gained renewed attention following Netflix’s series “The Crash,” which revisited the incident. Prosecutors described the crash as intentional. Shirilla, now 21, faces 15 years to life for killing Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan. Authorities said she intentionally drove her car into a brick building in Strongsville, Ohio, on July 31, 2022.

Police reports detailed that moments before the crash, Shirilla’s vehicle reached 90 mph in a 35 mph zone. Data indicated the accelerator was fully engaged with no braking applied.

Initially, the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner classified the deaths as accidental. However, evidence led investigators to conclude the crash was intentional, adjusting their findings to homicide.

At trial, prosecutors argued Shirilla targeted her boyfriend due to their toxic relationship. Flanagan was considered an unintended victim. The recent airing of “The Crash” has brought the case back to public attention. Following this, Shirilla’s attorneys have appealed to the Ohio Supreme Court. They assert her trial lawyers did not thoroughly investigate evidence related to her diagnosis of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), a condition they claim might have caused Shirilla to lose consciousness before the crash.

Shirilla’s legal team emphasized that her trial attorneys should have explored this condition further. They argue expert testimony might have explained her failure to apply the brakes. In response, Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley remains firm in his belief in Shirilla’s guilt.
