On June 16, 2005, the Goodyear blimp Stars and Stripes crashed during a severe storm. The incident occurred at the Coral Springs industrial park on Sample Road. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The well-known Goodyear blimp is a frequent sight at South Florida sporting events. It unexpectedly fell from the sky during the storm, landing just east of the Sawgrass Expressway.
John Whalen, Chief of the Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department, remarked that at the time, it was one of the biggest events to happen in the area.
