Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones lost the Republican runoff for governor in Georgia, defeated by health care executive Rick Jackson, despite President Trump’s support. Trump’s endorsed candidates succeeded in other races.
On Tuesday, President Trump’s chosen candidates won three Republican Senate primaries. However, he faced setbacks in Georgia. Trump’s candidate for governor, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, lost the runoff to Rick Jackson, marking the second time Trump’s pick for governor has lost this month. Earlier in Iowa, Trump’s backed candidate, Representative Randy Feenstra, was defeated.
There were victories for Trump in Georgia, where Representative Mike Collins, known for his firm stance on immigration, emerged victorious in his primary. Collins is set to challenge Senator Jon Ossoff in a highly anticipated contest. Trump’s favored Senate candidates also triumphed in Republican strongholds like Alabama and Oklahoma.
Georgia Republicans Defy Trump’s Influence
Georgia Republicans did not follow Trump’s endorsement of Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in the gubernatorial primary runoff, displaying willingness to oppose the former president. Jones’s defeat was a significant surprise, considering his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results by collaborating with Trump allies. Additionally, an election-denier candidate lost the runoff for Georgia’s secretary of state.
Since 2020, Trump has experienced disappointment with Georgia Republicans. Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger defended Georgia’s election results when Trump disputed them. Furthermore, Trump-endorsed candidates for Georgia’s Senate seats lost in runoff elections in early 2021, giving rise to Senator Jon Ossoff’s political career.
