Data Breach Attempt on Princess Kate’s Medical Information

A former healthcare worker attempted to sell the confidential medical records of Princess Kate. This information related to her abdominal surgery conducted at a well-known private clinic used by the royal family. The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) disclosed this in a recent statement.

The ex-employee was working at the London Clinic when this data breach occurred. Reports first emerged in March 2024 during a period when Princess Kate was covertly receiving cancer treatment. The ICO, Britain’s privacy and data protection authority, shared the outcome of its criminal investigation through a statement on its website on Wednesday.

The ICO issued a now former healthcare professional from London with a formal caution in relation to an offence under section 170(5) of the Data Protection Act 2018… the statement read, highlighting the serious nature of the misconduct.

The ICO statement elaborated that the conduct involved the intentional misuse of sensitive personal information. The individual had offered to disclose this data for financial gain, constituting a clear violation of trust.

Furthermore, the ICO considers both the evidence and the public interest in every criminal investigation. In this case, they determined that a formal caution was a suitable and proportional response to the transgression.
