Catherine, Princess of Wales, published an essay on Friday emphasizing the importance of protecting children from constant digital exposure. The essay coincides with the British government’s recent decision to ban social media for children under 16.

The princess reflected on her official visit to Reggio Emilia, Italy, sharing her concerns over a childhood dominated by screens. She urged society to foster real connections for children, highlighting the pervasive presence of digital devices in their everyday lives.

“In an increasingly digitalized world, where so much of life is mediated through screens, the need for genuine human connection has never been greater,” wrote the princess. She advocated for activities like spending time in nature and engaging in creative pursuits, which she believes nurture non-digitizable skills such as awareness, empathy, humility, and love.

The essay appeared on the website of the Royal Foundation Center for Early Childhood, a charity backed by the princess. While the British royal family typically avoids making political or policy statements, Catherine’s essay notably follows the government’s announcement related to social media restrictions for children.
