John Alite, a council member in Englishtown, N.J., since 2025, has been arrested on charges including extortion and terroristic threats, according to the state’s attorney general.
Alite, a previous associate of the Gambino crime family, faced charges of theft by extortion, corporate misconduct, making terroristic threats, and usury for lending money at illegal interest rates.
Alite, 63, who has a past marked by violence alongside John A. Gotti, had since tried to rebuild his image. He became a councilman for Englishtown in March 2025, after his release from prison in 2012.
Together with Stephen Locrotondo, 67, Alite allegedly offered loans with annual rates over 50 percent and intimidated individuals for money and assets. This scheme, supported by his company, Straightened-Out Entertainment, reportedly earned Alite at least $75,000.
Jennifer Davenport, New Jersey’s attorney general, emphasized the state’s commitment to lawful business conduct. She remarked that the actions in question were unacceptable and pledged accountability for offenders.
Court documents indicate Alite obtained a residential property from a victim under duress. The charges arise from testimonies of two individuals who endured threats of violence from Alite.
