Lin-Manuel Miranda and Eisa Davis are transforming their concept album Warriors into a Broadway musical. The story, rooted in a 1965 novel and later a 1979 cult film, centers on the Warriors, a street gang navigating their return from the Bronx to Coney Island, Brooklyn. They face pursuits from rival gangs and police.
This new production marks Miranda’s first full musical project since Hamilton. The musical is slated to begin previews next March, with an opening planned for April at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre. Jenny Koons will direct the production, while Miranda and Davis collaborate on the book. Casting details have not been released.
“Musicalizing such a vibrant world for the concept album has been a thrill, and now we’re coming out to play on Broadway at the Lunt-Fontanne. We can’t wait,” Miranda and Davis said in a Tuesday statement.
The duo released the album in 2024. They adapted the story with key changes, such as portraying the Warriors as an all-female gang. The album features artists like Ms. Lauryn Hill, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Billy Porter, Ghostface Killah, RZA, Marc Anthony, Colman Domingo, Cam’ron, Shenseea, and Joshua Henry.
The album blends diverse musical styles, including salsa, ska, agro-rock, boy band pop, old-school rap, and K-pop. Lyrics incorporate Spanish and Korean alongside English. Notable tracks include “We Got You,” an R&B song performed by a male gang wearing cardigans, and “Quiet Girls,” a feminist anthem.
