On Wednesday evening, Venezuela experienced two powerful earthquakes, resulting in significant damage in Caracas. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the initial quake registered a magnitude of 7.1. Its epicenter was located west of Morón, a community by the Caribbean coast, approximately 168 kilometers (104 miles) from the capital. This earthquake occurred at a depth of 13 kilometers (8 miles).

Shortly after, a second, larger earthquake struck. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded it at a magnitude of 7.5. This quake’s epicenter was 16 kilometers (10 miles) southwest of Morón, with a depth of 10 kilometers.

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands in response. In Caracas, buildings swayed, forcing people to evacuate and stay outside. Witnesses saw furniture through collapsed walls and dust clouds in several districts, including two bustling neighborhoods.

Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello addressed the nation, stating that the earthquake was felt across various states. He alerted citizens to issues in Caracas’s Altamira area, where structures had fallen, and advised individuals to stay outdoors due to potential aftershocks.

Cabello reported injuries and urged drivers to provide clear paths for emergency vehicles. He assured the public that rescue operations were underway, following established protocols. He urged vigilance, especially concerning children and older adults, and encouraged communication to ensure safety.
