Bill Maher Criticizes Darializa Avila Chevalier’s Stance on Key Issues

Bill Maher recently criticized Darializa Avila Chevalier, the socialist backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, after she won the Democratic primary for New York’s 13th Congressional District. Her responses concerning prisons, deportation, and previous anti-American social media posts have sparked significant controversy.

In his show ‘Real Time with Bill Maher,’ Maher discussed Chevalier’s interview with The New York Times Editorial Board, where she declined to clearly state if a convicted murderer should serve time in prison. Maher remarked, ‘The New York Times asked her, ‘If someone murders someone randomly, should they go to jail?’ Couldn’t get her to say yes for that.’

“So, there is a woke mind virus, and I think we found patient zero. Her name is Darializa Avila Chevalier,” Maher stated.

During a recent rally in New York City, Darializa Avila Chevalier stood with fellow candidates, including Claire Valdez and Brad Lander, showing solidarity in their political campaign. Avila Chevalier eventually defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., leading with 49.4% of the vote to Espaillat’s 45.9%.

Maher also cited Avila Chevalier’s prior comments about the United States, as well as her intention to kneel during the congressional oath. He said, ‘She also says that the United States, the country she’s running to be a part of, is occupied native land, and says this country, America, is a f—ing disgrace.’

Avila Chevalier, alongside Senator Bernie Sanders and Mayor Zohran Mamdani, campaigned actively during the lead-up to the Democratic primary. Mamdani has shown unwavering support for her, despite resurfaced anti-American social media posts.

In her interview, Avila Chevalier was pressed on how to treat murderers under her abolitionist beliefs. While acknowledging that incarceration occurs within the existing system, she did not explicitly endorse it. ‘The fact that the murder happened is tragic. The fact that there was a circumstance in which that could even come to pass is tragic, and all of that is a reflection of systems that allowed that circumstance to be possible,’ Chevalier explained.

She expressed her firm opposition to deportations, stating, ‘I am not OK with any deportation,’ arguing it is a policy driven by a person’s birthplace.

Avila Chevalier’s political platform advocates for ‘Abolish ICE,’ Medicare for All, Housing for All, and a ‘Babies, not Bombs’ agenda. Her campaign focuses on abolishing deportation and redirecting funds used for overseas military engagements.

The New York Times characterized her as a proponent of abolishing police forces, eliminating borders and prisons, and confiscating property from landlords.
