Cubs Secure Victory Through Bullpen Strategy Against Brewers

In Milwaukee, the phrase ‘Bullpen day’ tends to unsettle Chicago Cubs fans. Manager Craig Counsell opted for this strategy during a crucial Game 5 of the National League Division Series last October, bypassing Shota Imanaga in favor of bullpen management. On a recent Sunday, Counsell reprised this tactic in a tight 4-3, 10-inning triumph over the Milwaukee Brewers.

This decision followed complications including Ben Brown’s neck injury and a rainout-induced schedule disruption in New York, which led to a doubleheader against the Mets. While this wasn’t Counsell’s preferred method for tackling the division-leading Brewers, his choice proved successful. The Cubs bullpen excelled, deploying seven relievers including newcomers like Bryse Wilson from waivers.

The offensive squad faced challenges from Brandon Woodruff and Milwaukee’s bullpen throughout most of the day. Despite this, they secured two runs via a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk, wrapping up the road trip with a 6-1 record.

Counsell praised his players, saying, “The guys are having fun right now, and we’re playing good baseball.” He emphasized the importance of the bullpen’s performance over the offensive output.

A highlight occurred when designated hitter Seiya Suzuki contributed a two-RBI single in the 10th inning. His efforts contributed to the Cubs’ improved record of 12-4 in their last 16 games, following a previous 7-22 slump.

Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong noted, “A 6-1 trip on the road against two National League opponents is something to be proud of.” He stressed the team’s understanding of their identity despite streaky performances.

In the 10th inning, with a 1-1 score, Brewers reliever Joel Kuhnel encountered difficulties. He walked Michael Busch, forcing in the go-ahead run. Suzuki’s two-run single made the score 4-1, prompting Counsell to bring in Ethan Roberts, who soon faced trouble. Christian Yelich scored off Roberts, leading to his removal.

Jordan Wicks entered as relief. Despite walking Garrett Mitchell and raising tensions, he maneuvered a successful escape by inducing a double play to end the game. Wicks credited this experience as a significant boost in his career.

Several pitchers contributed to the win. Ryan Rolison initiated the game, allowing a solo home run to Gary Sanchez in two innings. Bryse Wilson provided valuable mid-game relief, showcasing his experience and readiness. Caleb Thielbar and Tyler Ferguson maintained the team’s position, while Jacob Webb ensured the game extended into extra innings.

Throughout the road trip, the team utilized 13 different relievers, with Vince Velasquez designated for assignment to accommodate Wicks. Counsell acknowledged the impact of schedule disruptions, expressing optimism about recovery post-game.
