A group of Democrats has launched a centrist initiative called “Promise to America.” They aim to oppose socialism and support strong borders, capitalism, and patriotism. This pledge comes in response to recent victories by Democratic Socialists of America in New York primaries.
President Donald Trump reacted sharply to these victories. He warned that the Democratic Party is under the control of “godless communists,” threatening American values. On Truth Social, Trump described these electoral wins as a major threat, suggesting that such socialist policies would ultimately lead to failure.
“If socialism prevailed, I’d be the greatest communist by granting free rent, houses, and food. Sadly, such a country would fail in two or three years,” Trump mocked.

The organizers of the initiative have revealed 15 Democrats who support the pledge. These include ten sitting House representatives and five candidates running for the House:

The initiative aims to gather support from 20 Democratic candidates, 200 state and local officials, and 2,000 activists.

Promise to America represents a counter-reaction, as Democrats witness the GOP exploiting fears of socialism in upcoming elections. Political scientist Hans C. Noel noted the importance of maintaining unity within the party while recognizing differing ideological factions.

The Democratic Socialist of America criticized the initiative for alleged ties to lobbying interests, highlighting potential conflicts within the party.
“Should we tally up their Big Tech donations next?” the group questioned, indicating a readiness to expose financial connections.
Noel commented that Republicans might use the leftward shift in New York as a talking point, similar to past portrayals of prominent Democrats as extremists. He suggested that both parties exhibit strong ideological wings influencing their direction.
