USMNT Faces Challenge with Balogun’s Suspension

The United States men’s national team (USMNT) encountered a significant setback during their otherwise successful 2026 FIFA World Cup run. Star striker Folarin Balogun received a red card during the team’s 2-0 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on July 1. This incident occurred in the 64th minute, leading to his suspension for the Round-of-16 match against Belgium scheduled for July 6. Balogun is expected to return if the USMNT advances to the quarterfinals.

During Friday’s training session, Balogun expressed his relief that the suspension is limited to one game. He shared his perspective on the red card, emphasizing that the incident was unintentional. “It’s important for me to say, obviously, first and foremost, it was totally unintentional, which I’m sure a lot of people know,” Balogun remarked. He questioned the referee’s decision, stating a yellow card would have been more appropriate due to the lack of intent and the circumstances limiting his movement.

ESPN’s Jeff Carlisle reported on Balogun’s emotional “roller coaster” over recent days. Balogun described his experience as frustrating yet surreal. Despite his mixed emotions, he stressed the importance of remaining calm and acting thoughtfully. “There’s still lots of people were inspiring, little kids, boys and girls who are watching, and we have to show them the correct way to handle things even when you think it’s unjust,” he stated.

Balogun contributed significantly to the team’s success, scoring in the 45th minute before his red-card incident, marking him as the first player since Zinedine Zidane in 2006 to score and receive a red card in a World Cup knockout match. The incident involved Balogun and Bosnia’s Tarik Muharemovic competing for the ball, resulting in Balogun’s boot making contact with Muharemovic’s calf. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) recommended a review, leading to the referee’s decision to issue a red card.

USMNT head coach Mauricio Pochettino and teammate Christian Pulisic defended Balogun, arguing that the action did not merit a red card. Pochettino noted, “For me, never is a red card,” emphasizing Balogun’s lack of intent to harm Muharemovic. Pulisic echoed this sentiment, asserting that Balogun “didn’t deserve the red card.” Despite their views, Balogun’s absence presents a challenge for one of USMNT’s most crucial matches.

Balogun, aged 25, is a critical player for the USMNT, having scored three goals in his World Cup debut. Pochettino will need to adapt his tactics to compensate for the loss of Balogun’s contributions. The team’s goal is to reach the World Cup quarterfinals, a feat they last accomplished in 2002.
