Celebrities’ Video Campaign Opposes Trump Administration on America’s 250th Anniversary

A group of wealthy Hollywood celebrities and activists launched a video campaign to mark America’s 250th anniversary, urging Americans to oppose President Donald Trump’s administration. The nearly 10-minute video features notable personalities, including Mark Ruffalo, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ted Danson, and Judd Apatow. It premiered on Variety.

During the video, the celebrities recite rules from Timothy Snyder’s 2017 book, “On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.” Snyder, an author and historian, emphasizes the significance of the coming midterm elections as a critical point for the nation, where voters will guide the country’s future direction.

“Today, the Republic is 250 years old. Strange though it is for me, this book has been along with the Republic for the last 10 years. I wrote it in November of 2016,” Snyder stated. He further noted, “A time when things could turn very well, or they could turn very ill indeed.”

The video includes readings from Snyder’s book highlighting the danger of tyranny. Celebrities recited lines like “Do not obey in advance,” delivered by Leslie Odom Jr., Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Holland Taylor. Another rule, “Beware of the one-party state,” was voiced by Isabel Allende and Lisa Rinna.

Mark Ruffalo, known for roles in Marvel’s “Avengers” films, discussed his involvement in the video with Variety. Ruffalo has been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration. He expressed hope for a government prioritizing young people’s needs and moving away from corruption.

Ruffalo stated, “My hope is that after this very bad and corrupt time we are living through now, we move away from a government that caters to the wealthy and powerful and focuses on the needs, desires, and dreams of the children and young people.” He also urged the closure of the wealth gap, environmental conservation, and an appreciation for Indigenous wisdom.

Snyder shared his views on X, describing the 250th-anniversary celebration as a reminder that a better America is possible. He criticized current leaders, accusing them of threatening liberty, arbitrary rule, and government corruption.

“Sadly, those who lead our official celebration today represent every threat to liberty that the founders named: Injustice, indifference to law, undue accumulation of wealth, and collusion with foreign powers,” he wrote.

The video participants include Isabel Allende, Judd Apatow, Margaret Atwood, Joan Baez, Sophia Bush, Misha Collins, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Eric Holder, Jenifer Lewis, Maria Ressa, and more.
