Sasha Sabrina Azeez’s life took an unexpected turn when she discovered she was pregnant with twins. The news was not only joyous, but it also alerted her to a serious health condition. Initially, she embraced her pregnancy wholeheartedly while planning her wedding to her fiancé, Chris.

During her first ultrasound, the 31-year-old from Toronto, Canada learned she was carrying twins. Alongside this joyful news, doctors identified a large cyst on her ovary. Azeez explained that the cyst had gone unnoticed due to her lack of symptoms, and her main focus remained on expecting twins.

Health Concerns Arising

The cyst measured around nine centimeters and continued to grow. As concerns mounted, doctors recommended a surgical removal at 20 weeks, ensuring the twins were developed sufficiently. Azeez described the procedure as terrifying given the risks involved.

The operation, which lasted six hours, required the removal of her right ovary and fallopian tube due to the cyst’s size, which had expanded to 19 centimeters. The pathology report identified the cyst as an immature teratoma, a rare tumor with potential malignancy.

The Reality of Cancer

In a few months, Azeez learned of her pregnancy, underwent major surgery, and discovered her cancer diagnosis. Though she felt fine aside from typical pregnancy symptoms, the urgency of her condition was clear. She emphasized the significance of her medical team’s efforts in treating her cancer while safeguarding her twins.

Welcoming the Twins

Azeez gave birth on October 4, 2024, via open abdominal surgery. Delivered at 29 weeks, the twins were immediately cared for in the NICU. Meanwhile, Azeez underwent further surgery to remove visible cancerous tissue.

Post-surgery challenges were intense, with Azeez focusing on recovering while breastfeeding before starting chemotherapy. Her treatment began on October 16, following regular NICU visits.

Completing Treatment

By December 30, 2024, Azeez completed her chemotherapy cycles. It symbolized the end of a challenging chapter and the beginning of a new one. Now cancer-free, she maintains regular blood tests and scans to ensure her health remains stable.

The twins are thriving, nicknamed “our miracles” by the family, as their presence helped reveal Azeez’s cancer.
