Naomi Osaka’s Remarkable Journey at Wimbledon

1 month ago 0

The All England Club, London – Naomi Osaka, a trailblazing 28-year-old, has transformed the tennis court into a platform for both her athletic prowess and her unique sense of fashion. As a four-time Grand Slam champion, she now finds herself heading into the second week of Wimbledon for the first time. This achievement comes after she won her first three matches without losing a set, demonstrating a significant shift in her performance on a surface that once seemed challenging for her.

In a recent interview, Australia’s Daria Kasatkina expressed surprise at Osaka’s impressive play on grass, after losing to her 6-1, 6-3 in 65 minutes in their third-round match. Kasatkina noted that Osaka’s style suits the surface well, signaling a breakthrough in her adaptation to grass-court play.

“I was not expecting what she produced today. But I was expecting a tough match,” Kasatkina said, highlighting Osaka’s growing comfort on grass.

Osaka’s progress has been mirrored by her fashion statements. At this year’s majors, she has showcased her passion for design with ensembles that reflect her cultural heritage. At Wimbledon, she sported a white kimono-style dress adorned with cherry blossoms and cranes, crafted with designer Hana Yagi. At the Australian Open, she wore a jellyfish-inspired outfit by Robert Wun, while at the French Open, her attire echoed the silhouette of the Eiffel Tower.

Despite the focus on tennis, Osaka is enthusiastic about discussing her outfits, as they offer a means of self-expression. She feels more equipped to talk about her fashion choices than her tennis, even though she has been playing the sport for over two decades. Her clothing serves as a vehicle for her authentic self, allowing her to communicate her style and brand of tennis.

Throughout her career, Osaka struggled with playing on grass, as her style favored hard courts. Grass required a different approach, emphasizing footwork and adaptability. Her hiatus in 2022 for the birth of her daughter, Shai, provided a fresh start. Upon her return, the sport had evolved, with players employing more powerful and strategic play.

To adapt, Osaka worked with a former ballerina, Simone Elliott, to enhance her agility and balance on the court. By December 2023, she had incorporated techniques that improved her movements and shots, like the open-stance backhand, into her play style. Though it took time, these efforts paid off. Osaka experienced a turning point last summer, which marked the beginning of her resurgence in the sport.

Since then, Osaka has steadily risen back to prominence. She reached the Canadian Open final and the US Open semifinals in 2023. This season, encounters with top players such as Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Świątek have been learning opportunities, as they presented new challenges.

Ahead of the grass season, her coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, encouraged her to view grass courts from a new perspective. This led to Osaka focusing on ball placement and court positioning, helping her to appreciate the fluid nature of grass-court tennis.

As Osaka prepares to face Aryna Sabalenka in her first Wimbledon fourth round, she enters the match with newfound confidence and understanding of grass court dynamics. Her journey at Wimbledon reflects not only her growth as a player but also as an individual who embraces self-expression both on and off the court.
