Glenview’s July Fourth Parade Defies Weather Challenges

The July Fourth parade in Glenview set a festive tone as marching bands created excitement along Harlem Avenue. Children eagerly gathered candy tossed from floats while crowds cheered on units celebrating the America 250 theme. Although the term ‘semiquincentennial’ was too long for banners, the significance of 250 years since America’s founding in 1776 was evident in signs carried by some parade participants. The event began at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday.

Heavy thunderstorms loomed over the Chicago suburbs, leading to cancellations in several areas. Northbrook called off its 4 p.m. parade when ominous clouds brought rainfall. On July 3, Wilmette canceled its celebrations at Gillson Park, which included fireworks and live music. Park Ridge decided to start its fireworks display at 8:10 p.m., aiming to finish before the rain, resulting in fewer attendees than usual.

The Glenview parade on July 4, 2026, featured a highlight as children crowded around a participant from the Glenview Malayalees India unit distributing treats. Many floats and units provided candy and toys to the young onlookers.

Other events in the area also faced cancellations. Evanston’s concert at Arrington Lagoon was canceled due to water accumulation. The parade was halted at 3:45 p.m. upon detecting lightning 10 miles away, allowing attendees time to find safety. Winnetka canceled pre-fireworks activities, keeping Duke Childs field closed until 8:30 p.m., just before their fireworks were scheduled.

Despite the weather, the Skokie Park District chose to continue with its fireworks at 9:30 p.m., even though face painting and bounce house events were cut. By Saturday evening, most suburban fireworks displays proceeded as planned once the rain subsided.
