For many pet owners, parting with a cherished animal ranks among life’s toughest experiences. An increasing number of individuals are now turning to artificial intelligence to manage their grief. Technologies like AI-generated letters and chatbots are offering new ways to remain connected with pets posthumously. These digital tools engage with users through photos, memories, and the personalities of their departed pets.
Platforms are actively evolving to handle grief support and memorialization. For example, Karyad offers users the chance to generate ongoing ‘messages’ reflecting a deceased pet’s memory. ToThereOn provides a digital sanctuary for preserving stories, images, and memories interactively.
Technology’s influence on grief processing marks a significant shift in the digital age. Yet, experts question the balance between remembrance and simulation. Bethany Hsia, a veterinarian and CodaPet co-founder, expressed understanding of AI’s rise in grief tools during an interview with Newsweek.
‘When families face the end of a pet’s life, they often experience a gap in emotional support,’ Hsia explained. ‘Veterinarians aren’t grief counselors.’
She observed a ‘missed handoff’ post a pet’s death, as owners find themselves without their usual support system. A pet’s absence leaves behind a profound silence.
AI aims to bridge this gap, not replace pets but ease the transition. Some applications send personality-inspired messages from pets, while others create digital avatars for comfort and memory evocation.
Research suggests maintaining a connection with a deceased pet, termed ‘continuing bond,’ plays a crucial role in grieving. Common methods include photos, journals, and online tributes. A 2022 study in OMEGA—Journal of Death and Dying highlighted varying impacts based on individual needs.
AI memorial tools extend these traditional practices, offering an interactive and potentially immersive dimension. While supportive for emotions and memory, they should not substitute professional grief support. Hsia emphasized the importance of receiving adequate help when needed.
‘If it aids emotional processing, it can be positive,’ Hsia noted. ‘Concerns arise if additional support is needed but not received.’
Ethical Concerns
AI pet memorials have sparked discussions on the ethical role of technology in grief. Supporters highlight the comfort these tools provide, while critics worry about preventing acceptance of a pet’s death. Unlike static tributes, AI creates new interactions, raising questions about memory preservation versus creating post-loss relationships. Additionally, there are concerns about privacy, data ownership, and the commercialization of grief.
Hsia believes the tool’s impact hinges on individual usage. She questions whether AI might affect the readiness to adopt new pets, stemming from her shelter background experience. However, she is confident technology can’t replace the bond with a living animal.
Human Connection
Despite AI innovations, pet owners still seek connections with others who understand their loss. Online support groups and memorial communities remain active, with people sharing stories, photos, and advice long after their pets have passed.
‘There’s a real sense of community in sharing memories,’ Hsia said.
As AI integrates further into daily life, its influence on grief processing may expand. Whether a permanent fixture in pet bereavement or another tool among many, its popularity underscores a universal truth: maintaining a connection to a lost pet endures beyond their time.
