Controversy Surrounds Folarin Balogun During USMNT World Cup Defeat

United States men’s national team striker Folarin Balogun found himself at the center of controversy during the 2026 FIFA men’s World Cup. The USMNT suffered a 4-1 defeat to Belgium in the Round of 16 on July 6, a match Balogun didn’t anticipate playing due to a suspension.

On July 1, Balogun received a red card following a challenge against Bosnia-Herzegovina’s Tarik Muharemovic. After VAR review, the decision led to an automatic one-game suspension. Unexpectedly, FIFA revoked the suspension, allowing Balogun to play against Belgium, sparking debates about ethics and corruption.

Belgium manager Rudi Garcia expressed disbelief at FIFA’s decision, jokingly comparing it to an April Fools’ prank. However, Garcia praised Balogun for approaching him after the final whistle, acknowledging the player’s character and emphasizing that Balogun was not to blame for the situation.

Despite the controversy, Balogun was unable to impact the game significantly. Belgium’s defenders, Brandon Mechele and Nathan Ngoy, effectively kept him in check. Malik Tillman scored the USMNT’s lone goal with a free kick in the 31st minute.

Balogun ended his World Cup tenure as the leading scorer for the USMNT with three goals. The team has consistently exited the World Cup in the Round of 16 since their failure to qualify in 2018, with the last quarterfinal appearance in 2002. Belgium had ousted the USMNT in the Round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup as well.

Belgium will proceed to face Spain in the quarterfinal at SoFi Stadium on July 10.
