Pentagon and DOJ Form Task Force to Tackle Media Leaks

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth revealed a new joint task force with the Department of Justice. This initiative aims to identify and prosecute officials leaking sensitive information to the media.

The Pentagon’s Office of General Counsel (OGC) now holds authority to request and obtain all necessary records and support during media leak investigations. Hegseth emphasized that leaked information places lives at risk. New procedures and tools will significantly aid in safeguarding the joint force.

He warned, “The security of our nation cannot serve as a bargaining chip for those chasing headlines. Access to confidential and secret information is a sacred trust, and violators will face legal consequences.”

Hegseth expressed gratitude to Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche for his support. He remarked on the unprecedented level of cooperation between departments.

The announcement followed the DOJ’s recent subpoenas to four New York Times reporters. These subpoenas demand testimony before a federal grand jury. This move received backlash from The New York Times and press freedom groups, who see it as an intimidation tactic.

The presence of federal agents at reporters’ homes should alarm any American who values press freedom, said David McCraw, The New York Times attorney.

McCraw added that their journalists report facts and enhance the public’s right to know government operations. He condemned the act as an attempt to silence journalists.

Since taking over last year, Hegseth has been active in curbing leaks to the media. Investigations were launched, and threats of polygraphs to identify leakers were made. Reporters face restrictions, such as signing a pledge not to seek unauthorized material, even if not classified.

This policy led to most Pentagon reporters returning their press badges. However, legal challenges arose. A judge issued a preliminary injunction, stating that the chaperone requirement for journalists violated the First Amendment.
