England Pubs Boosted by World Cup: Financial Struggles Persist

3 weeks ago 0

The recent World Cup run has provided a significant financial boost to pubs across England, particularly those like the Bread and Cheese located in Thundersley. Owner Steve Haslam shared in an interview with NBC News that the profit from World Cup sales accounts for around 15% of the annual revenue. He expects to earn an additional £7,000 to £9,000 ($9,400 to $12,000) on Wednesday night when England faces Argentina in Atlanta.

According to UK Hospitality, an extra 5.5 million pints were sold during the group stages alone. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) anticipates Wednesday to be the strongest night of the tournament, with over 6 million additional pints sold, marking a 75% rise compared to a typical July Wednesday.

Despite this temporary surge, the pub industry faces significant challenges. The BBPA published data showing 161 pubs closed across Britain between January and March this year. With mounting business rates and taxes, margins are under pressure.

Overall “margins are getting squeezed because it is a tough time for pubs right now.”

The government relaxed licensing laws for England’s matches, allowing extended opening hours. Despite these measures, industry leaders urge for broader support and lower taxes to prevent further pub closures. Ash Corbett-Collins from CAMRA emphasized the socioeconomic contributions of pubs and urged fair business rates and tax reliefs.

The British Treasury claims it’s supporting the sector with tax cuts and business rate reforms. However, industry experts, including Haslam, argue these efforts are insufficient and call for lasting solutions.

“We risk losing more and more pubs unless meaningful support is given.”

In response, the UK introduced a 15% discount on business rates for pubs and music venues starting April, aiming for stability over the next two years. But the BBPA insists on a long-term strategy to preserve pubs and related jobs. Haslam regards pubs as vital community centers, fostering social connections and creating cherished memories.
