Yellowstone Bison Attack: Park Officials Decide Not to Euthanize Animal

Yellowstone National Park has decided not to euthanize the bison involved in a viral attack on a park visitor. The incident took place last week, leaving a grandfather named Carl Isom-McDaniel with severe injuries, including multiple broken bones that required surgery.

According to park officials, ‘no management action’ will be taken against the bison. TMZ reported on the decision. The attack was captured on video by wildlife photographer Mike MacLeod and shared widely online. It shows the bison charging at McDaniel and tossing him into the air.

MacLeod expressed concern that the bison might further injure the grandfather. He stopped filming to help drive the animal away. Despite the frightening encounter, neither McDaniel nor his grandson provoked the bison.

The bull had previously charged a group of teenagers before McDaniel and his grandson encountered it at a campground. Although they attempted to leave after sensing the bison’s agitation, the animal focused its attention on them.

Since the attack, McDaniel has undergone surgery and is recovering. His initial concern was for his grandson, who escaped unharmed. MacLeod recalled McDaniel asking, ‘How is my grandson?’ after the incident.

Yellowstone advises visitors to maintain a distance of at least 25 yards from bison, as these animals can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and run at speeds of 30 mph. Bull bison can become particularly aggressive during mating season.

The attack has spurred reactions from Yellowstone visitors on Reddit. Comments ranged from expressions of shock to suggestions on actions to take during such incidents.

Park officials have confirmed they will not take further action against the bison involved. This decision has sparked a discussion online among those who have witnessed or heard about similar encounters.
