The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has requested Florida authorities hand over a Bangladeshi immigrant accused of murdering his sister-in-law. This follows his initial deportation under the Trump administration and subsequent illegal reentry into the United States. He was later released by the Biden administration.
DHS revealed that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer for Akbor Miah, also known as Shahidul Islam, asking for him to be transferred to federal custody once his state criminal cases conclude.
Miah first entered the U.S. in 2016. ICE arrested him in February 2018, and he received a removal order later that year. He was deported to Bangladesh in January 2019. Despite this, he illegally reentered the U.S., a federal crime, and was released by the Biden administration in March 2022.
Monica Islam, his sister-in-law, was found dead from gunshot wounds in Lake County, Florida, in May 2025. Miah has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.
Investigators discovered Monica’s DNA in Miah’s vehicle and a bullet lodged in the passenger door, suggesting an altercation took place inside the car. Authorities charged him with murder, alleging that he fled to New York after the crime but was subsequently apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service and extradited back to Florida.
Acting Assistant Secretary of DHS, Lauren Bis, commented on the arrest, emphasizing the importance of keeping dangerous individuals away from the public. ICE filed a detainer to prevent Miah from becoming free in the country again.
Prosecutors allege that Miah made incriminating internet searches on the morning of the murder. He reportedly rented a vehicle and traveled to New York post-incident. His capture involved cooperation among local, state, and federal agencies. Florida prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty due to the nature of the crime.
