During Friday’s round, DeChambeau faced a two-stroke penalty. Officials concluded he had improved his position on the fifth hole by flattening fescue grass behind his ball. This decision came hours later, when a fan’s video appeared on social media. DeChambeau, who initially shot a 66 and was in second place, had to revisit the scene with officials after finishing his round.

DeChambeau disagreed with the ruling, telling an official during a heated exchange he might not play the next day.

Chamblee’s Critical Commentary

Brandel Chamblee, known for his longstanding critiques of DeChambeau, didn’t hold back. On Golf Channel, Chamblee said, “He just danced all over the path behind the golf ball… He did everything but take a weed wacker to the tall grass.” He further urged DeChambeau to accept responsibility, stating, “You accept this like a man. You look at the evidence and you’re like, ‘You’re right. I did break the rule.'”

Chamblee has expressed disdain for DeChambeau, notably since DeChambeau joined LIV Golf. After LIV’s Mexico City event, Chamblee criticized course conditions, linking them to DeChambeau’s choices.

DeChambeau’s Response

The back-and-forth continues, with Chamblee accusing DeChambeau of being “childish” and “immature” after practicing late into the night. Chamblee suggests DeChambeau might be engaging in performative actions to maintain attention.
