New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has stirred controversy with his statements about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mamdani suggested honoring an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for Netanyahu, raising eyebrows among politicians.
Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., criticized Mamdani’s stance on Fox News, arguing that Mamdani and others are pulling the Democratic Party away from its core values. “He’s not a Democrat, he’s socialist, and we know that the whole socialist movement is attempting to hijack the Democratic Party,” Gottheimer stated during “America’s Newsroom.”
Gottheimer’s criticism of Mamdani extends to various issues, including Mamdani’s opposition to law enforcement and prisons in the U.S. He even accuses Mamdani of wanting to eliminate the U.S. Senate.
Bill Maher, host of “Real Time,” voiced concerns about a potential socialist takeover within the Democratic Party, saying he could vote for JD Vance if Democrats succumb to such pressures.
Mamdani defended his position at a rally alongside immigration advocates after the Supreme Court’s decision affecting Haitian and Syrian protections. He stated that his interest in executing the ICC warrant is not specific to Netanyahu, stressing the importance of holding accountable those accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Mamdani’s call for Netanyahu’s arrest was a campaign tent, although he later admitted lacking authority to enact it. Instead, he urged the federal government to carry out the ICC warrant if Netanyahu visits New York.
Gottheimer expressed frustration, pointing to a double standard in how Mamdani approaches international leaders. “We’ve got Iranian leadership that have been in New York,” Gottheimer noted, highlighting the lack of similar action against top enemies of the U.S.
The debate extends into New Jersey election integrity discussions, following a software error causing over 6,000 non-citizens to be mistakenly added to voter rolls, igniting concerns about election security.
