Protecting the Commons: A Fundamental Responsibility

2 weeks ago 0

Protecting and maintaining shared resources, known as the commons, along with ensuring equitable access, is not a radical notion. It is a vital part of sustaining our society.

Deferred Maintenance: A Shared Threat

Deferred maintenance poses risks to both physical structures and democratic republics. Consider the mold that forms due to leaks in roofs, remedied only by placing buckets, and how this neglect mirrors the erosion of democratic institutions. Concentrations of power among wealthy elites and corporations, often bolstered by unregulated political contributions—referred to as dark money—further highlight threats. Additionally, the enactment of laws that limit voting rights serves as another example of this decay without active, preventive measures.

The analogy between buildings and governance emphasizes the necessity for ongoing, proactive care to prevent deterioration. Without it, both physical structures and democratic principles may falter, impacting the broader community.
