Cyclospora Outbreak Affects Produce Purchases and Raises Safety Concerns

A Cyclospora outbreak linked to recalled iceberg lettuce is prompting changes in consumer behavior across the United States. A CBS News/YouGov poll reveals that food safety concerns are leading many to reduce purchases of fresh produce. The survey shows that 40% of Americans are buying or consuming less produce due to the outbreak, with only 4% purchasing more.

Federal health officials are investigating various clusters of the illness. They urge consumers to avoid recalled products. The primary outbreak has been associated with recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms. According to a CDC update on July 24, at least 1,947 people in nine states have been affected, resulting in 98 hospitalizations. No deaths have been reported. Other separate Cyclospora outbreaks are under investigation nationwide.

Decline in Produce Purchases Due to Outbreak

The CBS News/YouGov survey, conducted from July 22 to July 24 with 2,193 U.S. adults, shows widespread awareness of the health issue. The survey has a margin of error of 2.7 percentage points.

  • 61% of respondents are tracking news about Cyclospora closely.
  • 40% have reduced their fresh produce consumption or purchases.
  • 56% report no change in shopping habits.
  • 4% report consuming or buying more produce.

Public confidence in the FDA, responsible for food safety, is mixed. Only 13% of respondents have “a lot” of confidence in the agency. Meanwhile, 40% have “some” confidence, and 47% have “not much” or no confidence in the FDA’s food safety efforts. Newsweek has contacted the FDA for comments.

Recalled Lettuce at the Center of the Outbreak

The outbreak is centered on iceberg lettuce from central Mexico, distributed by Taylor Farms. A voluntary recall was issued on July 17. The affected states include Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Taylor Farms reported no positive Cyclospora tests as of July 24 but took precautionary actions by recalling products and suspending production in central Mexico.

The CDC continues to monitor the situation. Since May 1, 4,173 laboratory-confirmed domestic cases of cyclosporiasis have been recorded, along with additional suspected cases under analysis.

Understanding Cyclospora

Cyclospora is a parasite, Cyclospora cayetanensis, that affects the small intestine, causing cyclosporiasis.

Transmission: It spreads through consumption of food or water contaminated with fecal matter. Fresh produce like leafy greens and berries are common vectors when exposed to poor sanitation.

Contagion: Cyclospora does not spread directly from person to person as the parasite needs to mature in the environment before becoming infectious.

Symptoms: They can appear 2-14 days after exposure, including watery diarrhea, appetite loss, weight loss, stomach cramps, bloating, increased gas, nausea, and fatigue. Vomiting and low-grade fever may occur.

Treatment: Healthy individuals typically recover with antibiotics, though untreated infections can last for weeks or months.

Taylor Farms Response and Actions

Taylor Farms acted rapidly when questions arose about the outbreak source. The company recalled all relevant lettuce products and suspended sourcing from central Mexico. A spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to food safety and independent audits.

Taylor Farms is also conducting a thorough review of food safety protocols at their central Mexico facility, working with health authorities, and maintaining transparency with customers and partners.

CDC Recommendations for Consumers

Federal health officials advise consumers to:

  • Check for recalled Taylor Farms iceberg lettuce and dispose or return it if found.
  • Sanitize surfaces in contact with the lettuce using hot, soapy water or a dishwasher.
  • Contact a healthcare provider for prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms after eating fresh produce.
