The son of Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Eric Bieniemy has been arrested in Virginia for allegedly shooting his mother, Mia Bieniemy. The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies arrived late Sunday at a shooting scene in Ashburn, Virginia. They found Mia Bieniemy, 57, with multiple gunshot wounds. She was hospitalized and reported stable on Monday.
Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, was taken into custody regarding the shooting. He faces charges of malicious wounding, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center.
At the time of the incident, Eric Bieniemy, the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, was with his team in St. Joseph, Missouri. He missed Monday’s practice session. Head coach Andy Reid spoke during practice, expressing support for Bieniemy and his family. “Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family,” Reid said. “He’s got a great support group here as a family, as needed. And then we’ll just let time take care of it from there.”
Eric Bieniemy resumed his role with the Kansas City Chiefs after Matt Nagy left to join the New York Giants. Bieniemy was Kansas City’s offensive coordinator from 2018 to 2022, where the Chiefs led the NFL with an average of 30.1 points per game, according to CBS Sports Research. In 2025, he worked as the Chicago Bears’ running backs coach. Prior roles included assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for UCLA Bruins in 2024 and the Washington Commanders in 2023.
