The ongoing dispute about releasing President Joe Biden’s interview recordings has concluded. Biden’s legal team decided to withdraw their opposition to the release of the audio recordings and transcripts from interviews undertaken with his memoir ghostwriter. This move came in light of Biden’s status as a private citizen.
Judge Tanya Chutkan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia agreed to the voluntary dismissal. These recordings were initially captured during an investigation by Special Counsel Robert Hur into Biden’s management of classified documents. Conversations between Biden and ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer occurred in 2016 and 2017 while working on the memoir “Promise Me, Dad.” The Department of Justice will now provide these materials to the House Judiciary Committee.
Hur’s investigation centered on Biden’s actions as vice president and as a U.S. senator concerning classified documents. Hur did not pursue charges, citing the inability to prove intentional misconduct. He suggested Biden could be perceived as a well-meaning individual with memory lapses, which could affect jury perception.
The Heritage Foundation, a conservative organization, sought access to these recordings through FOIA requests, arguing for the public’s interest in understanding the investigation’s grounds. A court ruling in their favor underscored that any remaining privacy concerns were outweighed by public interest.
In February, the Justice Department shifted its stance to disclose redacted copies of the recordings and transcripts to involved parties, including the House Judiciary Committee. Biden’s legal representatives did not comment on these developments.
