A 15-year-old girl known only as “Arvin Jane Doe” for nearly 50 years has been identified as Michelle Louise Collier. She disappeared from Fresno, California, in February 1978. Her remains were discovered four months later in a shallow grave near Arvin. Despite efforts, investigators could not identify her until now.
Michelle’s sister, Cynthia Dunbar, spoke about the family’s long wait during a news conference. “We wondered for 50 years where she was,” Dunbar said. The family finally has some closure thanks to advancements in forensic technology.
Relentless Search for Answers
In 1978, a tractor operator uncovered Michelle’s skeletal remains. The case went cold without an identity. An autopsy confirmed it was a homicide, but the cause of death remained unknown. Detectives could only refer to her as Jane Doe.
The case resurfaced over the decades. Forensic developments led to a breakthrough with the use of forensic genetic genealogy. This technology combines detailed DNA analysis with genealogy research.
In collaboration with Othram, a Texas-based forensic laboratory, investigators created a DNA profile from Michelle’s remains. This profile led to potential familial connections. The final match came in October 2025 when a DNA swab confirmed her identity as Michelle Louise Collier, daughter of Maria Collier.
The Family’s Long Wait
A school portrait of Michelle was shown at the news conference. As Dunbar addressed the media, she expressed regret. “You didn’t deserve to die this way,” she said. The family now prepares to lay Michelle to rest properly.
