The U.S. White House criticized Spain’s left-wing government after the border between Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa, and Morocco failed to hold, leading to a significant migrant influx. The White House principal deputy press secretary, Anna Kelly, stated that President Trump has long warned that such far-left globalist policies would lead to consequences like mass migration. Kelly urged Spain and similar nations to reverse these policies to avoid potential disaster.
Ceuta’s president requested an emergency declaration after over 2,000 migrants crossed from Morocco in the past ten days. Video footage revealed chaotic scenes of migrants, some equipped with swimming flippers, crossing into Ceuta and overwhelming local authorities who struggled to manage the crowd.
Despite the call for a national emergency, Spain’s central government refused the request. The Ministry of the Interior maintained that migratory flows do not fall within the state civil protection regulations, which manage emergencies. Consequently, they concluded this mechanism could not be activated as requested by Ceuta’s President Juan Jesús Vivas.
The situation has reignited debate in Spain over immigration policies. Conservative voices criticize the government, alleging that policies giving social services to minors crossing illegally encourage migrations. Conservative journalist Javier Negre argued that Spain’s current stance is pushing Europe towards becoming a failed continent.
In contrast, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez defended the integration of migrants, citing economic necessity due to low birth rates. Without migration, he warns, countries will face economic decline, including issues with public services and GDP stagnation. Sánchez emphasized the need to incorporate migrants effectively to prevent these outcomes.
Prime Minister Sánchez reaffirmed Spain’s commitment to addressing the crisis. He stated that Spain is collaborating with Moroccan and international authorities to restore order in Ceuta, utilizing all necessary resources.
