His favorability rating has plummeted to 11 percent, marking the lowest recorded level since the poll began in 2006. This downturn coincides with McConnell’s reduced visibility, raising doubts about his future in politics and capacity to serve following his recent hospitalization.

McConnell’s office, while releasing brief updates, has not provided detailed health information, sparking calls for transparency. The CNN poll reveals McConnell’s unfavorable rating stands at 53 percent. Furthermore, 15 percent of respondents have never heard of him, and 20 percent hold no opinion. The last favorability survey in October 2023 showed McConnell at 16 percent favorability versus a 58 percent unfavorable rating. Historically, McConnell’s favorability never fell into the teens before 2023. His highest favorability of 32 percent was recorded in December 2010, with a 25 percent unfavorable mark.

Concern over McConnell’s absence has grown, visible through online discussions and physical signs like the “Missing Mitch McConnell” poster appearing in Washington, D.C. Following the release of recent photos, debates continue regarding his recovery and the adequacy of public information shared.

Columbia political science professor Robert Y. Shapiro informed Newsweek that McConnell’s silence on his health is poorly received. Shapiro noted that despite incentives to complete his term, the writing appears on the wall for a resignation. Yet, honoring his commitments and avoiding a potential Democrat successor seem to drive McConnell’s decision to stay.

The survey highlights political implications of these events, with 59 percent of Republican and Republican-leaning independents expressing unease or discontent about nominating someone over 70. Conversely, 41 percent show enthusiasm or acceptance.

The CNN poll, conducted with 1,225 respondents from July 23 to July 27, carries a margin of error of 3.2 percent. As McConnell’s recovery remains in question, discourse on age, health, and transparency among senior Congress members will persist.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has demanded McConnell provide a thorough health update, citing Kentuckians’ need for clarity regarding the senator’s ability to fulfill his duties. Beshear increased efforts by sending letters to McConnell and Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune. He noted McConnell’s absence from Senate votes and legislative activities, emphasizing a need for public assurance of his fitness, or his resignation.

Beshear argued that U.S. senators have relinquished much personal privacy and urged McConnell to demonstrate his capability. In a Monday update, McConnell’s office stated “Senator McConnell continues recovering from a fall suffered in June.” It acknowledged daily consultations with attending physicians about his rehabilitation, which includes rigorous physical therapy sessions. His childhood polio history plays a significant role in his mobility challenges. McConnell remains unfit to leave his rehab facility.

Potential Legislative Outcomes

If McConnell’s Senate seat becomes vacant prior to Monday, Kentucky laws would permit a special election this year to fill his remaining term.
