Seattle Mayor Defends Decision to Replace Police Chief Amid Ongoing Investigation

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson addressed the decision to replace the city’s police chief as a necessary move, though she did not provide detailed reasons. The leadership change occurs as police continue the search for individuals involved in a recent fatal, gang-related shootout.

The incident took place at a food festival near the Space Needle, resulting in two bystander deaths. A 15-year-old was apprehended on the scene and faces assault charges, yet the gun he used was not linked to the fatalities.

Wilson, along with former Police Chief Shon Barnes, faced scrutiny for delays in releasing crucial details of the incident, including the status of suspects. As the city’s second Black police chief, Barnes had been praised for improving officer recruitment and reducing downtown crime.

Numerous Black community groups, a significant business organization, and some City Council members criticized Wilson’s decision to remove Barnes.

During a Friday news conference with Andre Sayles, the new interim chief, Wilson acknowledged Barnes’s contributions. She stated that her role as mayor provided unique insights into the Seattle Police Department’s operations.

Wilson clarified that the miscommunication surrounding the mass shooting was one of several factors influencing her decision to ask for Barnes’s resignation.

Interim Chief Sayles announced plans to increase police presence at public events for the rest of the summer. He also expressed confidence that the investigation into the shootout is progressing, with more arrests expected soon.

The shooting erupted during the Bite of Seattle festival, known for hosting numerous food, retail vendors, and performers. Three individuals, including a suspect, lost their lives, while four others were injured, among them a 2-year-old boy.
