Bill Maher Criticizes Fauci Over Senate Hearing Testimony

Comedian and talk show host Bill Maher recently criticized former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci. Maher’s comments came after Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination 111 times during a Senate hearing concerning his role in managing the COVID-19 pandemic.

During an episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” Maher accused Fauci of telling falsehoods regarding the origins of the virus. The virus has led to over seven million confirmed deaths globally. Maher stressed the importance of determining the virus’s origin. “How did it start?” Maher asked.

Fauci had previously maintained that the virus stemmed from animal-to-human contact at a wet market in Wuhan, China. Maher criticized Fauci’s dismissal of the theory suggesting a lab leak. “He was telling people up front that it was from the wet markets,” Maher said. “And he knew better.” Maher referred to diary entries where Fauci communicated with other scientists who had agreed with the lab leak theory.

Maher also addressed Fauci’s association with controversial “gain-of-function” research. This research involves altering a virus’s genetics, which Maher connected to the skepticism surrounding the Wuhan Institute of Virology. While Fauci denied this research led to the virus’s release, Maher commented, “I think that’s what did happen.”

In June 2025, the World Health Organization suggested the virus likely resulted from zoonotic spillover from bats or another host. Maher highlighted how the lab leak debate became intertwined with social issues. “We could have had that debate in a rational way,” Maher stated, noting that racial stigmas muddied the discussion.

He argued that discussing the lab leak theory was avoided due to concerns about racism. “You were racist if you said this escaped from a lab,” Maher added. He voiced frustration at how societal issues impeded rational debate.

This critique marks a shift from many media figures who have traditionally supported Fauci. Curtis Houck, managing editor of NewsBusters at the Media Research Center, observed Maher’s willingness to engage in straightforward discussions. “Once again, Bill Maher is willing to level with the country,” Houck said.
