A Step Closer to Achieving Practical Nuclear Fusion Energy

On December 13, 2022, Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm revealed a significant advancement in fusion research at a news conference. This breakthrough took place at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.

Early in the morning on December 5, researchers executed an experiment involving lasers and a small hydrogen fuel pellet. These lasers delivered 2.05 megajoules of energy to the pellet. Remarkably, the pellet released approximately 3.15 megajoules in response.

This experiment marked a major milestone for fusion science. Scientists have been striving for over fifty years to achieve a fusion reaction where the energy output surpasses the energy input. Despite this success, the journey to utilizing fusion as a clean energy source continues.

The potential of fusion energy lies in its ability to produce energy without emitting greenhouse gases. Yet, the technology still requires significant development before this promise becomes a reality.
