1 day ago 0

Vozinha, the 40-year-old goalkeeper renowned for his World Cup performance with Cape Verde, has arrived in Chile to join the ranks of Colo Colo. His journey to Santiago included unexpected delays due to documentation and personal issues, casting uncertainty over the transfer.

Upon his arrival, Vozinha expressed his happiness and gratitude to the fans, saying, “I’m very happy to be here. And I want to thank the fans for the patience they’ve shown while waiting for me.” He invited supporters to join him at the Monumental Stadium, Colo Colo’s home in Santiago.

Colo Colo announced Vozinha’s signing on July 24, but his arrival was postponed three times, concerning fans and the club. However, he was warmly welcomed at Santiago’s airport by a large crowd with flags, banners, and chants. Vozinha’s achievement as the oldest player in a national team’s World Cup debut added to his popularity after he helped keep Spain scoreless, a team that eventually became champions.

Fans, like Marcos Antonio Barrera, are hopeful that Vozinha will propel Colo Colo to a championship win and aid in their continental goals for the next season. “I’m excited. And if Colo Colo wins the title, next year comes the Copa Libertadores, which makes everything even more exciting for all of Chile and South America,” said Barrera, a 32-year-old supporter.

The goalkeeper is set for medical examinations on Monday before officially signing a six-month contract with an option for a 12-month extension. Vozinha is also expected to join training and be officially introduced to the team on Tuesday.

In a display of respect for his global recognition, the Chilean Football Federation amended its rules, allowing him to have his nickname “Vozinha” on his jersey, which translates to “grandma” in Portuguese. This decision aligns with league regulations, which typically mandate players to use their surnames.

Previously with Chaves in Portugal’s second division, Vozinha’s notable World Cup performance included significant saves against teams like Spain, Uruguay, and Argentina, showcasing his skills on a world stage. His online fame skyrocketed, with his Instagram following increasing from fewer than 50,000 to over 29.5 million.

Supporters remain optimistic about Vozinha’s potential impact. “The Colo Colo family and all of Chile are eagerly waiting,” said fan Sebastián Paredes. “Now he has to earn his place at Colo Colo through talent, dedication, hard work, commitment, and by winning over the fans. Hopefully, he’ll be a great signing and help put Chile on the map.”
