Jets Look to Revitalized Defense in 2026 Under Coach Glenn

The New York Jets anticipate significant improvements from their defense in 2026 with Aaron Glenn at the helm as head coach. Glenn, with experience as a defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, aims to overcome last season’s challenges. The Jets’ previous defensive record was less than stellar, as they allowed an average of 29.6 points per game, the second-highest in the league. They also ranked poorly in terms of rushing yards allowed, averaging 139.5 per game, and total yards, averaging 355.6 per game.

Despite trading away key defenders Sauce Gardner and Quinnen Williams last season, the Jets’ defense is showing signs of improvement. The inclusion of No. 2 overall pick David Bailey and rookie D’Angelo Ponds, along with seasoned players like All-Pro linebacker Demario Davis and All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, has bolstered their lineup.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, a notable addition, joined the Jets from the Miami Dolphins in March. He signed a new three-year, $40 million contract with New York. His presence is already being felt in training camp. Fitzpatrick made a standout play by intercepting a pass from quarterback Geno Smith, marking the first interception during the 11-on-11 drills.

“He’s extremely smart, and he loves football, and at safety, that’s what you’re looking for,” Glenn stated regarding Fitzpatrick’s capabilities.

Fitzpatrick, originally drafted by the Dolphins in 2018 and later traded to the Steelers, has had an impressive career. During his time with Pittsburgh, he achieved five Pro Bowl selections and three first-team All-Pro honors. In 2022, he led the league with six interceptions, also recording 96 tackles and 11 pass deflections. Overall, he has 21 career interceptions, tying him for ninth in the league since 2018.

Known as a hard-hitting safety with a strong on-field presence, Fitzpatrick brings a much-needed boost to the Jets’ defense. His ability to be versatile on the field is expected to play a crucial role in the team’s defensive overhaul. Coach Glenn faces a pivotal season, as his focus on a strong defense is vital for both his role and the team’s success in 2026.
