Trump Urges Oil Companies to Reduce Gasoline Prices Amid Profits

2 days ago 0

President Donald Trump is urging oil companies to lower gasoline prices, citing their substantial profits during the Iran conflict. He argues that energy giants have gained at the expense of American consumers. However, industry experts offer a different viewpoint.

Trump’s Demand to Oil Companies

Trump criticized Chevron CEO Mike Wirth on social media, accusing him of overlooking the benefits the oil industry has seen under his administration. Trump insisted that without his administration’s actions, the oil industry would suffer.

He also called for a reduction in oil prices, stating, “Get your consumer (retail!) Oil Prices DOWN, NOW!” Trump’s remarks came as he addressed reporters, specifically targeting ExxonMobil and Chevron for their significant gains during the conflict.

Midterm Election Considerations

As the November midterm elections approach, Republicans like Trump face increasing voter concerns about high fuel costs and inflation. Affordability remains a key election issue, with many voters expressing discontent over current economic conditions.

Industry Perspective on Pricing

Despite calls for lower prices, experts suggest oil companies have limited control over gasoline prices. Patrick De Haan from GasBuddy emphasized that global crude oil pricing heavily influences costs. Adjustments in crude oil prices quickly impact retail prices, usually within a few days.

De Haan highlighted that refiners and gas stations often work with minimal margins. Most profitability comes from global market conditions, not deliberate price hikes.

Bob McNally of Rapidan Energy Group reinforced that the oil market’s cyclical nature affects prices and profits. Factors like the Iran conflict and global supply disruptions play a more significant role than any singular company’s actions.

Complexities of Fuel Pricing

The American Petroleum Institute (API) reiterated that fuel prices depend on various factors, including crude prices, refining costs, and taxes. An API spokesperson stated that recent administration policies have mitigated some global disruptions’ effects.

Ongoing Affordability Concerns

Recent surveys show that many Americans are concerned about living costs, including fuel prices. A July survey found that a majority disapproved of Trump’s economic management, with high numbers feeling financially strained.

Polling reveals a public perception of an affordability crisis, emphasizing gas and grocery prices as major worries. Many voters view the economy as a pressing issue heading into the midterm elections, with a call for candidates to address affordability challenges.
