Las Vegas Officer and Suspect Killed in Armed Confrontation

A Las Vegas police officer, a former Marine, died on Tuesday while addressing a report of an armed individual. According to authorities, the suspect also died in this incident.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department stated that officers, along with police drones, were dispatched to a business on the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue shortly before 4 p.m. The response followed a call reporting that an individual was waving a firearm and appeared to be intoxicated.

Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed during a news briefing that the officer was wounded during an exchange of gunfire with the suspect. Officers located the suspect near Mountain Vista Street and the Interstate 11 underpass. The suspect shot at the officers, prompting a return of fire. The suspect was pronounced dead on site.

A 30-year-old officer was critically injured during the shootout and later died at University Medical Center. Clark County Sheriff’s Office, with heavy hearts, reported that the officer, who had served as a Marine, joined the police force in November 2023.

“A 30-year-old Las Vegas police officer was valiantly treated by the Clark County Fire Department, fellow officers, and emergency medical services,” shared McMahill. “He was taken to UMC, where nurses attempted to save his life.”

The department expressed its sorrow and committed to supporting the officer’s family through the mourning process.

The Nevada State Police and other law enforcement agencies also joined in expressing their condolences, empathizing with both the loss experienced by the officer’s family and colleagues, and the Las Vegas community.
