The college football season is on the horizon as preseason polls stir debates. The USA Today Coaches Poll recently sparked discussions among fans, focusing on team rankings and questioning the value of these early season projections. While I am mostly content with the current standings, I believe some teams are likely to outperform their preseason positions.
LSU Tigers (Preseason Rank: 13)
The LSU Tigers, guided by Lane Kiffin, appear poised for success in 2026. Kiffin’s leadership transformed the team into immediate contenders. Both coordinators, Charlie Weis Jr. on offense and Blake Baker on defense, are highly regarded in college football. A significant budget facilitated an exceptional roster, including the top-ranked transfer portal class. The Tigers’ ranking at 13 may be conservative. Despite Kiffin’s call for patience, achieving a Playoff appearance seems expected for LSU, setting a standard for what is considered a successful season.
SMU Mustangs (Preseason Rank: 20)
The SMU Mustangs shocked fans by reaching the Playoff in their first ACC season. Although the 2025 season didn’t mirror their initial success, the Mustangs came close to another Playoff entry with narrow losses. Returning a top-25 production level, the team benefits from experienced quarterback Kevin Jennings. The regular season schedule favors SMU, avoiding powerhouses Miami and Clemson. High expectations surround the Mustangs for another ACC Championship Game appearance, possibly against Miami, with head coach Rhett Lashlee highly trusted in pivotal games.
Houston Cougars (Preseason Rank: 24)
The Houston Cougars, dark horse candidates for the Big 12 title, show promise for the 2026 CFP. The team boasts strong returning production, notably on offense. New talent, like running back Makhi Hughes, strengthens their lineup with impressive past performances. Defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong’s innovative pressures are noteworthy. With a veteran squad and a manageable Big 12 schedule, Houston has a strong chance to claim the conference title. The schedule, strategically placed early matches, offers an opportunity to capitalize on rivals like Texas Tech before they find their groove.
