Michigan Republican Tom Smith Revives Campaign After Primary Win

Tom Smith, a Michigan Republican, has reignited his campaign to unseat Democratic Representative Kristen McDonald Rivet after a surprising primary victory. Initially, Smith had suspended his campaign and endorsed a rival, but he won nonetheless. He announced his renewed efforts at a GOP unity brunch in Macomb County.

During the brunch, Smith stated, “My name is Tom Smith, and I’m running for the 8th Congressional District to unseat communist comrade Rivet.” He called on Republicans to support his efforts to challenge Rivet. Despite inquiries from Fox News Digital, Smith did not confirm if he would be fully resuming campaign activities.

“I look forward to working with Speaker Johnson and the entire Republican team to expand our House majority and advance President Trump’s America First agenda to lower costs for working families and make America affordable again,” Smith said in a statement to CNN.

Smith initially backed opponent Al Lemmo after his campaign withdrawal. Lemmo came third in the GOP primary, trailing both Smith and Amir Hassan, a candidate backed by former President Trump. Hassan’s loss to Smith was marked by a wide margin.

In a video posted post-defeat, Hassan expressed no bitterness. “I fell short last night,” Hassan acknowledged. He promised to continue efforts to flip the district and congratulated his opponents. “I make no excuse. It was a tough race,” he added.
