White Sox Face Challenges with Injuries and Roster Moves

The Chicago White Sox are addressing injuries that impact their catcher lineup yet again. Recently acquired catcher, Joey Bart, sustained a fracture in his left hand, landing him on the 10-day injured list. General Manager Chris Getz indicated Bart will miss over a month of gameplay.

With Bart sidelined, the White Sox recalled catcher Edgar Quero from Triple-A Charlotte to strengthen their lineup. The team announced these changes, among others, prior to the series opener against the Cleveland Guardians.

In addition to Bart’s injury, left-handed pitcher Chris Murphy was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a left flexor strain. To fill the gap, right-handed pitcher David Sandlin was recalled from Charlotte.

Bart’s injury occurred during Thursday’s intense 13-inning match against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. White Sox manager Will Venable expressed his disappointment, emphasizing Bart’s importance to the team. Bart was acquired from the Atlanta Braves and had briefly participated in three games before his setback.

“Tough break for him,” Getz stated, “but we’ll find solutions as we continue to adjust.”

The catching position has been dynamic throughout the season, impacted significantly by injuries. Catcher Kyle Teel has been limited to 19 games due to various health setbacks. Presently, Teel is off the roster due to a left ankle sprain.

Despite challenges, Edgar Quero has recorded a walk-off RBI single against the Yankees earlier in the season and returns prepared to contribute once more. Quero has been managing a .194/.257/.235 stat line with two home runs in 61 games.

Quero acknowledges the struggles but remains optimistic, stating: “It’s tough, but you have to be strong mentally.” He emphasizes consistent improvement and readiness.

The team plans to alternate between Quero and Drew Romo as catchers, with Venable noting the strategy will be based on daily assessments and matchups, rather than predetermined alignments with pitchers.

In parallel, Sandlin, holding a 2-1 record with a 6.05 ERA, is poised to assist the team amid recent bullpen demands. Getz maintains the necessity for creativity in managing pitching roles as the season progresses.
