Former Big League pitcher Collin Balester provided insights into this unusual display. He acknowledged that some players occasionally celebrate in minor ways. However, he compared Yan’s exuberance to the celebratory culture in winter leagues in countries like Mexico and Yan’s native Dominican Republic. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy jump ten feet in the air,” Balester remarked.

Balester, who played for teams like the Nationals, Tigers, and Reds, expressed concern about the risk of injury from such actions. “If I was the team, I would be a little nervous about him blowing out his knee jumping up like that,” he noted. Yan’s routine involves jumping and landing on his knee, followed by a moonwalk up the mound, which raises doubts about its sustainability.

Despite Balester’s reservations, he was surprised to see Yan maintain this habit after reaching the Major Leagues. “To his credit, he’s done it,” Balester admitted. Yet, he highlighted potential challenges Yan might face from hitters who dislike being struck out followed by such a dramatic display.

Balester, reflecting on his time in the Majors from 2008 to 2015, commented on the evolving nature of the game. He observed that players today often celebrate home runs more openly. Despite this, he suggested that Yan’s celebrations might provoke hitters to overextend themselves, turning his dramatic flair into a strategic advantage. “I think it’s going to play in his favor,” he noted.

Yan’s approach undoubtedly invites attention and debate within the baseball community. Some appreciate the enthusiasm, while others see it as potentially asking for trouble.
