Jill Tokuda Wins Hawaii Primary, Faces November Election

Progressive Representative Jill Tokuda, a Democrat from Hawaii, secured a win in her primary election on Saturday. This victory sets up a November election battle against Republican state Senator Brenton Awa.

Tokuda is campaigning for a third term to represent Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District. This district covers the whole island state, excluding the island of Oahu, but includes rural and suburban areas of Oahu. According to the Cook Political Report, the district leans Democratic by 12 points. This suggests a strong likelihood of a Democratic hold in the upcoming midterm elections.

During the primary, Tokuda faced three challengers within the Democratic Party. Despite a broader trend of intraparty challenges in the House, none threatened her campaign significantly.

Fellow Hawaii delegation member, Representative Ed Case, also faced a challenging primary against a more left-leaning opponent. Case is considered more moderate compared to Tokuda.

Tokuda’s race involved controversy when a lesser-known opponent was arrested after an incident on Keawakapu Beach. Kirill Basin allegedly threatened someone over loud music, which led to a confrontation. A video showed Basin involved in a physical altercation, and he allegedly brandished a knife during the incident.

Commenting on the video, Tokuda described it as “disturbing” and emphasized the need for accountability in actions, irrespective of whether a person is running for office or is a public citizen.
