A bride-to-be, Polly Bibby, aiming to look like a princess for her wedding, encountered a severe allergic reaction due to a fake eyelash treatment. Bibby, a 26-year-old illustrator, decided to try classic eyelash extensions for her big day, diverging from her usual minimal makeup routine.
Despite undergoing a patch test and experiencing no initial reaction, she proceeded with the procedure before her wedding day, as reported by Kennedy News & Media.
Doctors warn of substantial risks when it comes to beauty enhancements, as illustrated by Polly’s unfortunate episode.
The treatment, costing approximately $88, initially pleased Bibby with a ‘dressier’ appearance. However, mere hours later, her eyes became watery and sore. Initially attributing it to hay fever, the condition worsened with her eyes stinging and producing a yellow discharge, prompting her to seek medical assistance.
At Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridge, medical professionals confirmed an allergic reaction to the eyelash extensions. A shocking image showed her eyes red, raw, and swollen. Bibby received antibiotics and antihistamines and was advised to wait three days before removing the lashes.
“To keep the eyes safe, artificial lashes should be applied by an experienced aesthetician in a sanitary environment,” stated Dr. Rebecca J. Taylor, a board-certified ophthalmologist. She warned of risks including trauma, infection, or allergic reactions to the glue.
Bibby, from Cambridgeshire, UK, feared her eye condition might mar her appearance on her wedding day to fiancé Benjamin May, aged 29. Sharing her experience, she cautioned others about engaging in new beauty treatments close to their wedding day.
In detailing her ordeal, she noted that several hours post-appointment, her eyes were red and raw, and the appearance resembled the character Sloth from ‘The Goonies.’ Intense discomfort, discharge, and blurry vision followed, escalating to where medical staff advised lash removal—an excruciating process likened to ‘acid being poured onto her face.’
Despite the ordeal, Bibby remains optimistic about her wedding but decided against eyelash extensions, opting instead for mascara, acknowledging, “I won’t be getting eyelash extensions for the big day.”
For future brides, Polly’s experience stands as a cautionary tale to avoid unforeseen beauty mishaps near their weddings.
