The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up to face the Los Angeles Rams in their preseason debut on August 15. Key player Patrick Mahomes, recovering from an ACL injury sustained during Week 15 of last year’s season, might sit out the preseason, according to Coach Andy Reid.
Reid indicated a strong likelihood that Mahomes won’t play against the Rams. He stated, There’s a pretty good chance I don’t play him [against the Rams]. Percentages are leaning that way. I don’t know if I’ll play him the second or third game, I don’t know that, but the percentages likely lean against doing that. We’ve got new people in those other positions behind him that need some work, and so the more reps they get, the better.
The focus on backups is evident as the team looks to integrate new faces into their system.
The backups stepping in include Justin Fields, newly acquired this offseason and expected to adjust to the Chiefs’ gameplay. In addition, rookie Garrett Nussmeier, picked in the seventh round of the draft, stands to gain from additional playing time.
Following the initial game against the Rams, the Chiefs will face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Seattle Seahawks in subsequent preseason matches. Their regular-season journey begins with a game against the Denver Broncos on September 14.
