Trinidad Chambliss’ Journey in College Football

Trinidad Chambliss’ progress in the 2025 college football season stood out as a highlight. Chambliss, initially a quarterback at Division II Ferris State, began the season as a backup to Austin Simmons. His chance came on September 13 against Arkansas when Simmons was injured. Chambliss delivered a remarkable performance with 353 passing yards and one passing touchdown, leading to a 41-35 victory over Arkansas. He also contributed 62 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Throughout the season, Chambliss accumulated 3,937 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, and three interceptions. On the ground, he added 527 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. His efforts led Ole Miss to the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Former Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin received recognition for spotting Chambliss in the transfer portal and nurturing his quarterback skills. However, some within the SEC question the extent of Kiffin’s credit for Chambliss’ success. An SEC coach expressed to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg that Chambliss deserves more individual recognition.

He’s a dude, the coach said, suggesting that Kiffin is perhaps overly credited for Chambliss’ development.

Chambliss continued to excel after Kiffin’s departure to LSU. In the College Football Playoff, Chambliss threw for 362 yards and two touchdowns in Ole Miss’ 39-34 triumph over Georgia. In the semifinal against Miami, he recorded 277 passing yards and one touchdown, though Ole Miss fell 31-27.

The upcoming match on September 19 will see Kiffin, now at LSU, face Chambliss and Ole Miss. Kiffin aims to develop Arizona State transfer Sam Leavitt as a successful quarterback. Should Leavitt achieve similar stats, Kiffin’s reputation for developing quarterbacks may be reaffirmed.

Chambliss, however, has a chance to demonstrate he can excel as a top quarterback beyond the Kiffin-led system. This holds significance for his prospects in the upcoming 2027 draft.
