Controversy Surrounds DiJonai Carrington’s ‘White Privilege’ Post

DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky faced criticism for her online comment following her ejection from a game against the Indiana Fever. She posted “WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever” on her Threads account after being ejected for fouling Sophie Cunningham. However, Carrington’s reply to the criticism has yet to clarify the intent behind her words.

After the incident, Carrington responded to Emmanuel Acho, a former NFL player, who criticized her use of the term. On X, Carrington stated, “I’ve never once claimed that the assessment of the foul was white privilege (that was your assumption).” She encouraged Acho to exercise critical thinking, referencing his psychology studies.

Carrington, a Stanford graduate who transferred to Baylor, emphasized her understanding of white privilege. She said she would not use the term lightly due to its historical significance, without solid evidence.

“I would never use that term as a rhetorical weapon knowing the historical and social weight it holds without having the proper evidence to substantiate it.”

Despite these clarifications, the reason behind her Threads post remains unclear. It raises questions about whether her comment was directed at Cunningham or the Fever organization, without explicit accusations.

The league has not announced any disciplinary actions against Carrington. The incident occurred late in the first quarter when Carrington fouled Cunningham, who was on a breakaway layup, leading to her ejection. Cunningham, known for her stance on biological men in women’s sports, was visibly upset by the foul.

Previously, Carrington was involved in controversies with Fever players, including Caitlin Clark in 2024. During that season, Carrington was with the Connecticut Sun and faced backlash for actions perceived as mocking and criticism of Fever fans.

Carrington has also made headlines for her political expressions, wearing anti-Trump attire and encouraging opposition to certain policies.

In her sixth WNBA season and first with the Chicago Sky, Carrington is averaging 9.8 points and 2.2 rebounds. Her role in the team and her actions continue to attract attention both on and off the court.
