Mastermind of Minnesota Fraud Scheme Sentenced
Aimee Bock has been sentenced to 41.5 years in prison for orchestrating the ‘Feeding Our Future’ fraud scheme. Charged in Minnesota, the scheme involved the theft of nearly $250 million in COVID-19 relief funds. These funds were intended to feed children in need. While her defense claimed some participants acted independently, prosecutors emphasized the profound impact of her actions.
Fraudulent Cancer Claims in Florida
Authorities arrested Maribeth Ellen Jones, 51, from Bonita Springs, Florida, on charges of grand theft. She allegedly deceived over 200 people into donating more than $40,000 by falsely claiming to have cancer. She used these funds to settle personal debts. Jones surrendered at the Naples Jail Center after a felony warrant was issued by detectives.
Jones, working as an activities director, reportedly informed community members from 2022 to 2024 about her false medical condition. This prompted more than 200 donations as people believed she needed assistance. Community members even created a GoFundMe page linked directly to her bank account.
Additional scams involved prior GoFundMe campaigns where she fabricated her medical condition. The platform has since banned her account, refunding over $41,000 to donors under their Giving Guarantee policy.
Community Betrayed and Legal Consequences
According to detectives, Jones never had cancer and misused the funds she received. She managed to defraud 238 residents in Naples, amassing over $40,000.
“This case is appalling because it exploited the compassion of those wanting to help,” stated Sheriff Kevin Rambosk. “In Collier County, deceit for personal gain will lead to arrest and accountability.”
Rambosk emphasized the damage such scams cause, both financially and in eroding trust in genuine fundraisers aimed at helping those in real need.
